With just one day left until the Olympic torch relay reaches Istanbul, Turkish authorities are convinced that no crowd trouble will overshadow the events.

Speaking at a promotional conference for the torch relay's Istanbul leg yesterday, the event's coordinator, Yalçın Aksoy, believed that the event will not be upstaged by any protests.

“Any interaction between sports and politics is not right; sports are about amity, love and respect,” said Aksoy. “But we have extreme precautions in place in the case of any protests.

There will be a protest march in London on Sunday during the procession, and some of those carrying the torch are doing so in quiet protest.
