I wonder how foreigners can open a bank account in Turkey. Last time when I was there, I asked the HSBC about this. They told me I needed "tax number" which they didn't explain clearly what that meant. I guess it means I need to be employed and file tax to Turkish government so as to obtain a tax number. In fact I don't wish to live or work there but I do have business to do with Turkey. It will be more convenient for me to have an acount there.

So, any advice, folks?

You do need a tax number to open a bank account as a foreigner. We got one because we were buying a property in Turkey and needed to open an account to transfer money. However I know people here who are renting and they have bank accounts (and therefore tax numbers) so it isn't that difficult but you do have to actually be here in Turkey to do this go to the tax office.
