Sports and games have changed the world.
What kind of game do you like best?

Very interesting topic yilgun. Thank you.

Have you ever heard of the book Games People Play

It's a very good book to read. I was amazed at how well organized these games seem to be in society.

But if I'm not wrong the expression 'Games people play' and the book of that title refer to psychological 'games' nnot morale-building, playing fields of Eton, jolly hockeysticks type of games. Correct me if I'm wrong.

But nothing to do with the kind of games Yilgun was talking about.

A game is a game....and athletics is only one aspect of game playing...now isn't it?

the '"now I've got you" game

Perhaps we should define what is a game? What did Yilgun mean when he wrote the word "game"? This is reminding me of what the definition of is "is".

I didn't see anything useless or negative about the initial intention of this particular thread but of course you are entitled to your opinion...

I think you are missing the point that this is just the last in a long line of pretty pointless posts such as 'How Old is the World'?

Quoting peacetrain:

I don't see you as a mean person for it.

Thank you - I don't either but I was referring to another post on the thread

Dear Peacetrain,

Being a teacher you must know the difference between authoritative stating that games changed the world and providing arguments for it. If Yilgun says his post showed how the games he listed changed the world, I find it absurd. There is absolutely I am not to judge how useful or useless Yilgun posts are to everybody, I am speaking for myself only as I simply find his style somewhat annoying and see no point of listing things the way he usually does. I'd love to read about the impact of games on the world, but his post was nothing like it.

I guess it's all down to interpretation of the point Yilgun is trying to make. I myself saw the list as a set of examples and actually non "sport" games eg chess and backgammon are just as pertinent. Even our approach to solitary games such as 'patience', solitaire and the Rubik Cube can reveal something of our characters. I remember when the Rubik Cube craze began many years ago. I never could do it and I couldn't muster up the determination to beat it either.

In subtle ways perhaps games do change the world. I haven't time to rummage through the browser for articles, but I did post a link earlier. Games/sports can shape/change our characters and this may impact our daily lives to a greater or lesser extent . . . if not THE world our own little worlds. Provision of sports facilities or clubs can be used to improve lives in socially deprived communities or to get youths off the streets and have their energies channelled in a positive way.

As a child, my family played cards and board games together, rather than watch TV. Games are often used in schools, for many different reasons . . . can children follow rules? Have they listened to the rules? Can they develop skills of strategy/logic? Are they able to wait their turn? Are they able to understand they may not always win? (pass the parcel during celebrations in school are real eye openers).

Perhaps Yilgun didn't need to make a list, but we all have our quirky/annoying little traits.

I respect your view, we can't like everyone's style, that's life.

btw . . . one annoying trait of mine is to go off topic . . . ie I don't think I've restricted myself to your comments DD. I waffle too.

Forgive me?

I don't think I'm missing the point. I have understood that you think it is the last in a long line and so it ticks you off.

I am making my point which is, I am looking at this particular thread of Yilgun's in isolation and giving him the benefit of the doubt .

I would like to make a comment here and show my sensitive side.

I think some of the posts above are a bit harsh aimed at Yilgin. He is a long term member of this site, who tries to post things that he feels are important. He does not provoke argument or squabbles nor does he display his political side. He is working hard to learn English and to understand the sense of humour that is portrayed here.

May I suggest that if you do not like this type of thread then don't add to it.

I don't think it's about what kind of topics he started. TC is, in majority, a fun-loving lot and don't mind fooling around in threads. None of the folks who started those silly threads insulted people for answering them. Perhaps it's a matter of interpretation, but Yilgun's posts appear grave and patronising rather than amusing. He quotes numbers out of the blue, accredits quotes to names of a site he's taken them from instead their authors and never accounts for that.

Of course he's free to post whatever he wants and put it across however he wishes but so is everybody else to express their feelings about it.

Absolutely. That's what we've been doing isn't it? Expressing our opinions, our interpretations, our likes and dislikes. That's why we participate in threads. No problem.
