I am trying to learn by looking at translations to see if I understand. So just one question please. Should there not be a direct object (him-onu) before kaybetmek in the last sentence?

it could be. you can put there. its ok. while we are in the same sentence its not necessary most of the time. (if we can understand refer to him) but you can put there sure.
