I noticed that you modified your original post from 'learning about' to 'studying' so calişmak is probably better.

I'd say:
Bugün işte çocuk istismarı (or "çocuklara kötü muamele") konusu üzerinde çalışıyorduk, güzel değildi, benim için çok üzücü bir konuydu.

While "çocuk istismarı" is more about abusing children sexually or having them work in any kind of job, earning money over them "çocuklara kötü muamele" is more about "beating them or insulting/shouting at them"
