Hatay woman sells cow to pursue career in literature |
A woman residing in southeastern Hatay province has sold a calf in order to buy a computer, which will enable her to write more efficiently. |
Hatice Peköz, 50, a farmer in the village of Yeşilköy, said she has loved writing stories, poems and even novels ever since childhood. Her husband, Ali Peköz, has always supported her in this endeavor, she says, adding that she never listens to neighbors´ comments that there is no sense in writing.
Peköz, who sits down to write whenever she can find the time, says: "I want all my four children to graduate from university. My husband Ali agrees with me. I sold our only calf, as he recommended, and bought a computer. Now I can write much faster and easier. I have finished eight novels. I have more than 500 poems and countless articles, but I haven´t the opportunity to get them published. I would like to get them published one day." Spending a couple of days a week at the local Internet café because she cannot afford a home Internet connection, Peköz says she closely follows developments in arts and culture.

On the one hand it is wonderfu and deserves to be celebrated.
On the other hand, it is a shame it is so unusual that it is newsworthy.

yes, exactly.... I assume that people in Hatay are rather poor in general, but I am suspecting that girls are sent to schools even less then boys... so tragic. I hope this lady becomes famous one day.

Not exactly, Hatay has got a high cultural heritage, and people are mostly open-minded and intelectuel. Nearly all locals know Arabic, they can trade with Syria through Cilvegözü border, people can go to Arabic countries for working, so i think Hatay is better than most cities in Turkey, as expected every city has poor people, Hatay also but not different than other cities in Turkey...
