Orhan Pamuk: Characters pull me along in their own directions

In the process of writing this new novel, Pamuk kept many of the details secret, telling readers only that he was working on something new, but not letting them know anything about the title or the subject matter.

Readers familiar with Pamuk’s books may have guessed that once again the setting would be that familiar triangle of Istanbul districts, Cihangir, Çukurcuma and Beyoğlu. And, of course, the matter of love is woven throughout the story.

Pamuk spoke to Sunday’s Zaman on his new novel, the development process of this work and what he will be working on next, as well as touching upon how winning the Nobel Prize affected his life and his thoughts on the Ergenekon case.
