Hi all

I encountered contradicting meanings of this word lately, different sources giving different info..

I learnt from a (native) Turkish teacher that you can´t use "onca" in the meaning of "ona göre", since it means "çok", or something like "tens of - many of".

However, I recently discovered that my Turkish Grammar bible (by Geoffrey Lewis) says it can be used in the meaning of "ona göre". And Turkishdictionary.net gives a translation " according to him/her; in his/her opinion; as far as he/she is concerned." (and as a second meaning: "many-much of")

So, what should I think now? Natives tell me they never use it as "ona göre", books and dictionaries tell me it´s possible?

I would appreciate your opinion.

There´s never "never" in the language when it comes to especially turkish language. If "bence" can exist "onca" can exist as well, and in some dictionaries it gives "onca" as "according to him/her/it" as well.

However, it usually goes like:"bence, sence, ona göre, bizce, sizce, onlara göre"

I cannot say that it is wrong and it is not but it is not used a lot and for some reason it does not sound very good, maybe because it has other meanings as well.

"onca" is used for "so many, so much", and "onlarca" is used to mean "tens of"

Forexample:

Onca iþine raðmen bana vakit ayýrdý.

He/She has spared her/his time for me in spite of so much of her work.

Onca kýz arasýnda bir tek beni sevdi.

He loved only me among so many girls.

Onlarca kiþi bir anda markete geldi.

All of a sudden tens of people came to the market.
