My try-

Basic words are changed by suffixes added to them to give them their meaning.

´madan´ is a suffix added to the verb stem of ´tutmak´(to hold) which is ´tut´ and means ´without doing something´ so tutmadan means ´without holding´

Sometimes the suffix is ´meden´ to conform with vowel harmony eg ´gelmek´ ´to come´ becomes ´gelmeden´ ´without coming´

(in this case ´tutmak´ may not mean ´to hold´ as there are many other meanings,as heros has said below)

I hope this helps.
