For anyone in the UK interested this will be a very interesting exhibition.  I need to find some time to visit it.

A new exhibition called  ‘Byzantium’ is due to open this Saturday (25 October) at the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly in London and is the first major art exhibition of the Byzantine Empire in 50 years.

This exhibition features 1,000 years of history with 10 galleries filled with artefacts from around the world.

The exhibition is supported by J. F. Costopoulos Foundation, A.G. Leventis Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and has objects borrowed from museums of countries such as USA, Russia, Ukraine and countries throughout Europe.

The exhibition follows a chronological order covering a wide variety of Byzantium art and displays creative art of Constantinople between 330 AD and the fall of the city to the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

The exhibition is open to the public from this Saturday until Sunday 22 March 2009. Tickets are available daily at the gallery with admissions varying from £12 to £3.

There is also a number of lectures and exhibition related events due to be held.
