Tunceli Mayor Songül Erol Abdil has said many outlawed Kurdistan Workers´ Party [PKK] "guerillas" are killed along with soldiers and police officers because of the atmosphere of conflict and war in Turkey.

Abdil´s remarks came during a news conference she held yesterday in Brussels ahead of an event called the "Dersim ´38 Conference," which will likely declare that the Turkish Republic committed genocide against the Kurdish-Alevi population 70 years ago. The conference will be hosted by the European Parliament.

A riot by the local Kurdish-Alevi population in the eastern Anatolian province of Tunceli -- then named Dersim -- was forcefully suppressed. Though those alleging genocide claim that around 70,000 people were killed, no official figures have been provided by authorities.

Instead of calling PKK members "terrorists," she referred to them as "guerillas."
