I think they decided it is the same as "to be"

 not 100% sure without a sentence but I have seen it used as

you to be e.g

senin mutlu olmani isterim (I want you to be happy) or

benim olmani istermediler (they didnt want you to be mine)

 or ´being´

as in "yanimda olmani isterdim"      I want to be with you???????  is this correct?

I would translate it as

I want you to be with me/at my side ... but means the same thing, more or less

It´s the same form as ´ne yapmami istiyorsun´  ´what do you want me to do´  (literally what do you want ´my doing´   )        

I think it´s called a verbal noun

So it´s ´I want ´your being´ beside me´ or ´.......to be beside me´
