baslasam what does it mean?

the sam or san at the end of a word what does it mean?

I think it's because it is second conditional. They have:

başlasam - if i were to start
başlıyorsam - if I'm starting
başlarsam - if I start
başlayacaksam - if I (will) start
başladıysam - if I started

Still, I can't make out when to use which as they apparently do not follow English conditionals.
