I was wondering whether to use the -abil/-ebil or just geniþ zaman here. Wouldn´t -abil/-ebil be more for asking about ability? As in: "Am I capable of speaking to Ali?"

In this example he´s asking permission to speak to somebody, so wouldn´t geniþ zaman be more appropriate?

I´d appreciate it if you could explain this further.

Actually never mind, I just realized that with the wide tense it would translate into "Would I speak with Ali?"

It is both for permission and ability- just as "can" in English.

You cannot use geniþ zaman here.

For example if you ask "Can I open the window?"- you must use again -ebilmek

"Pencereyi açabilir miyim?"

Or if you want permission from your dad "Can I go to disco tonight?"

"Bu gece diskoya gidebilir miyim?"

etc.

Thank you for the clarification. What confused me was that I was thinking genis zaman to be the tense which you use to nicely ask people to do things for you, I just didn´t realize right away it wouldn´t work if you´re asking if you can do something yourself.

But I just realized that you are so right to get confused

if you say "can you open the window?" you can say it either "pencereyi açar mýsýnýz?" or "pencereyi açabilir misiniz?".

But if you say "Can I open the window?" you can only say "pencereyi açabilir miyim?"
