I wish to express the following:-

English: ´This envy is not a feeling only connected with the past [times].´

Turkish (1): ´Bu hasret sadece geçmiþ olan zaman ait bir dugy deðildir.´

or

Turkish (2): ´Bu hasret sadece geçmiþ zamana ait olan bir duygu deðildir.´

My question: Is there any significant difference between (1) & (2) above? Or will it be splitting hairs?

first of all "envy" is not hasret, it is "haset". "hasret" is "longing", so one letter would cause such a big difference .

about your translations, 2nd one is correct (except hasret).

first one needs to be changed a little:

(1)Bu haset sadece geçmiþ olan zamana ait bir duygu deðildir.

(2)Bu haset sadece geçmiþ zamana ait olan bir duygu deðildir.

Their meanings are the same.Their translations are:

(2)This envy is not a feeling only connected with the past times.

(1) This envy is not a feeling only connected with the times that passed.

which mean the same.

Then, I have a question for you

What does this mean "Or will it be splitting hairs?"

I should learn more English idioms...

splitting hairs-  There is a difference between two things, but so small that it is hardly worth acknowledging

example i hope

x - "it´s is blue"

y- "no its not it´s sea, sparkling blue"

X- "ok ok no need to split hairs"

x- "we agree its some form of blue"

I suffer from ´dyslexia´ >> which can be very embarrassing in written communication.

I meant ´Hasret´ and duygu ... instead of ´haset´ and ´dugy´.

As for your question ... insallah ...  has already explained it very adequately.  A very a tiny difference [the size of a hair´s thickness], merely a semantic difference, a difference not worth mentioning > but if someone starts arguing about it is said to be , ´like trying to split a hair´.

I wish my Turkish were as good as your English.
