hello,

I am trying to learn some turkish and found this site so far it has been helpful. but i am a little confused. i am working with turkish lessons and on pronouns1. i don´t get why for the word beautiful it is conjugated with im, sin, iz, siniz, ler but for the other 2 words they conjugated it with um, sun, uz, sunuz.

I also don´t get why there are two you;s

You need to understand the Turkish vowel harmony rules.

This link will hopefully explain it to you.

And the difference between the two "you" words, sen and siz.

This also applies for the respective pronouns.

You use sen where you know the person well, that is you are familiar with them, like a relative, good friend etc.

You use siz  in formal situations, eg meeting new people, motels, shops etc. or where you have never met the person before. I was told if you are not certain which one to use, it is always safest to use the polite siz version of you.

I also forgot to mention siz is used for the plural form of you. That is when addressing several people at once. Like when a teacher asks ´nasýlsýnýz?´ (How are you?) to the class.

I don´t get why there is one you in English either

Would you like to check some other languages?

German: du, ihr and Sie are used for "you"

Spanish: tu, vos, vosotros, usted and ustedes

French: tu, vous

Italian: tu, Lei, voi

even in English, there is a "thou"

Henry, Thank you for the help!! I somewhat get it now. I think I just need to practice and study it more. It is very similar to Albanian and that is what I speak, so I´m hoping that it won´t take long to learn. I want to be able to communicate with someone by August so we´ll see how it goes...lol
