Studying Turkish in Turkey

HI everyone.  I´ve been studying Turkish off and on for about a year and would say I´m a mid to high beginner. I´m planning on going to Turkey this summer to study Turkish at the Tomer schools associated with the University of Ankara.  I´m going to go from the beginning of June until the beginning of July (4 weeks).  I´m either going to go to Izmir or Antalya.  I have two questions.

First, do any of you know about this language program in general or the classes at these two specific locations?  I´ve heard that this is the best program for learning Turkish while in Turkey, but I´d love to know what you all think.

Second, which of these two places would you recommend?  I´m having a hard time chosing.  I don´t mind some heat, though I think it´s going to be pretty darn hot in either place.  In general I´m not into night life so much and like working out, playing tennis (only a rich man´s sport in Turkey, I know!), cooking, reading.  If you have any insights, I´d love to hear them.

Thanks for the help.

Kevin

Hi Kevin, I don´t really have much advice to give you, but I just wanted to let you know I am soooooo jealous you are doing this course. My turkish tutor suggested the two week summer school course for me but I could not afford it unfortunately. The programme looks great and you do have plenty of time to yourself (weekends etc). It will be great for you.

Personally I would go to the Antalya school. I have been to Antalya (Side) and enjoyed it, its got a bit of everything and you won´t get bored. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Hi Kevin,

I do not know much about the facilities in Antalya but in Izmir you can find public tennis courts in the district of Bostanli. I do not remember the current conditions since I am not living there anymore but they should be either free of charge or may require a small fee for using.

For working out you might need to enroll to a gym. Check this out for Izmir:

Especially in the mid-summer it is pretty more hotter in Antalya compared to Izmir. But on the other hand in Izmir you can not find a place to go swimming in the city center. You need about 1 hour to travel to a resort at the seaside. As far as I remember -it´s been years since I have been there- it is easier in Antalya.
