Can someone help me out........

I have just bought myself an iPod Nano - not really sure why as my mobile phone does everything I want from an iPod but it was an impulse buy!   But do I really need to install iTunes to be able to put music onto the iPod???  Can´t I just put MP3s onto it as if it were another drive on my computer???

 Yes you do!  Unfortunately Apple like to be "different".  Was really annoyed to discover that my car will play any MP3/4 players in the sound system EXCEPT ipod.....

Since I posted the question I have found that you DON´T have to use iTunes.......WinAmp will also transfer music to/from an iPod and there may be other applications.    But that doesn´t help me as I don´t have room on this laptop to install either iTunes or WinAmp

I think I might do a little experimenting!

There are a number of problems with using iTunes........on this laptop I don´t have room to install it but that isn´t the biggest issue.

With my mobile phone I simply connect it to a computer and drag and drop MP3 files into the ´music´ directory.    Next time I start media player it adds the new music to the playlist and it is available immediately - because no software (other than Windows Explorer or a similar file manager) is needed it can be done on any computer anywhere without the need for special software.   Not only does this let me add music from anywhere - it also means I can take music from my phone and copy it to any computer.

There is also a bit of me not liking being told what software I have to use to do something as simple as transferring a few files!

UPDATE:

I have found Share Pod that installs onto the iPod so needs no software on the computer that you plug the device into........so far it seems perfect and doesn´t require iTunes to be on the computer at all - although you do need to connect the iPod to a computer with iTunes once (and only once).
