Could you write your original text in french maybe? Even in english it´s hard to distinguish what you really want to express.

It is not something I want to express .. it is something that a friend received and asked me to translate. however before I give the answer back .. i was hoping to make sure I translated it correctly. Thanks anyway ..

I would translate it as:

I used to want to know (recognize) years ago because the past years without you, believe, I started to be sorry.

Wait for corrections though, I´m just a learner. 

I wish I had known you years ago because, believe me, I started to get sad for the years passed without you.
