Yes ıt was different,We had been using arabian alphabet..It was changed by our leader Atatürk..He decided to do this because Latin alphabet is more useful and easy..arabic alphabet wasnt useful with turkish..arabic letters were hard to write and read.At 1920s Most of the people didnt know how to write and read..this was a difficulty to develop ourselves..Our cultural and scientific development started after we changed it.Now everyone knows how to write and read in the main...
in brief
We changed it because this is better than it used to be
that's that

I guess first alphabet used by Turks was the Gokturk alphabet. Then they have used Uighur alphabet. This was followed by the Arabic alphabet after many Turks have been converted to Islam.
After the collapse of Ottoman Empire, there was a revolution in alphabet and Latin alphabet has been declared as the new official alphabet. This was in 1928, 5 years after the declaration of Republic.

Of course, this did not happen in one morning. It took years for the people to get accustomed to the new alphabet. The rationale behind the revolution was to have a better ability to follow the technological and scientific developments.

turks first used göktürk alphabet which belongs to them and it was B.C in the middle asia and that alphabet was also used in old scdandinavia.

turks changed a lot of alphabet and as atatürk was trying to make turkey a modern country, latin language was a need cos world is using latin so we had to addapt it
