ISTANBUL, Turkey, May 10 (UPI) -- Three guards and two civilians in southeast Turkey were killed by a landmine planted near the Iraq border, government forces said.
The landmine exploded Saturday in the Sirnak province with Turkish authorities blaming members of the outlawed Kurdish Workers Party, PKK, the Kuwait news agency KUNA reported Sunday.
The PKK has been active in the area for 15 years in an attempt to establish an independent Kurdish country.
An estimated 40,000 people have died in the fighting between the PKK and government soldiers, KUNA said.
