Hi, I´m new at learning turkish, I looked on this website and a couple others and in some dictionaries, but didn´t see how to express: what kind of (blah blah) is this? for example: what kind of car is this? what kind of a problem are you having? etc.

Also another question I have, do turks generally use the conditional tense in place of the word "if" (eðer) or do they use them both?

thanks a lot.

I can answer to the first part of a question. For now I know how to use this:

kind, type, sort - tür

Examples:

ne tür bir sinyal bu? - what kind of a signal is this?

ne tür bir araba bu? - what kind of a car is this?

Ne tür bir romantiksiniz? - What kind of a romantic are you?

I think the sentence needs "bir". Bu ne çeþit bir araba?

I think you can use ´ne gibi´ as well.   I think translations sites like babylon or google are pretty useless unless you only want a translation of a very simple short sentence - try putting in a long passage in Turkish and see what they come up with!

I was watching a movie with subtitles and they translated "what kind of a signal is that?" "Ne tür bir sinyal bu?" I think it is possible to use both. Also you can enter to google a sentence and see if it is used in texts in internet. I entered "ne tür bir" and got some examples The same with "ne çeþit bir".

ne çeþit (bir) x

ne tür (bir) x

ne gibi (bir) x

All of them are possible.

Ne tür müzikten hoþlanýrsýn? = what kind of music do you like?

Ne çeþit müzikten hoþlanýrsýn? = what kind of music do you like?

Ne gibi müzikten hoþlanýrsýn? = what kind of music do you like?

etc
