- "Kýzý  gönlüne  býrakýrsan, ya  davulcuya  kaçar - varýr, ya  zurnacýya."

- "Kýzýný  dövmeyen  dizini  döver."

My attempt at the second proverb:

Kýzýný  dövmeyen  dizini  döver

He/She that doesn´t slap (punish) their daughter, will slap their knee.

Meaning that: Parents who don´t discipline their children (for doing wrong), will later regret their inaction.

The matching English proverb is:

Spare the rod, spoil the child.

I notice this Turkish proverb is now also less sexist as:

Çocuðunu  dövmeyen  dizini  döver. Smile

And back to the first proverb:

Kýzý  gönlüne  býrakýrsan, ya  davulcuya  kaçar - varýr, ya  zurnacýya.

If you let a girl go to where her heart wants, it will be either she flees to the drummer, or to the piper.

Meaning: (Taken from this site´s dictionary)

If you let a young girl decide for herself whom she will marry, she will pick someone unsuitable. Smile

Well, if they are too young or immature to decide, then dont marry them young and wait they are mature enough to pick, choose, decide !

I hope this proverb isn´t the reason for arranged marriages for young girls! <img src='/static/images/smileys//lol.gif' alt='lol'> (fast)
