it says that when a noun describes what a second noun is made of there are no suffixes added to either noun.

e.g  metal kutu - metal box

But why do soups have an ý suffix???

e.g. iþkembe corbasý - tripe soup

Why is it not iþkembe çorba as the iþkembe is what the çorba is made from.   Is this an exception that applies to all foods?

metal kutu = metal box (indicating any metal box/ general name of a class of box which is made of metal)

iþkembe çorbasý = tripe soup (indicating an exact soup/ special name of a soup which is made from tripe)

So,yes, this exception (so far as I remember) applies to all foods.

metal kutu    : the box itself is made of metal.

metal kutusu: the box that you put metals inside.

when you re talking about the box itself, then use no suffixes.. but when talking about what you put in it or for what you re using it then you ll need a suffix.. i guess..

The exception from the usual rule is actually the first instance, not the example with the soup. It might help to think of the first type as nouns of "material" - meaning what material is something made out of?

Examples;

altýn yüzük - gold(en) ring

demir kapý - iron gate

plastik torba - plastic bag

silikon protez - silicone implant

kaðýt bardak - paper cup

So those are all types of materials.

You don´t use that with the soup, because a soup is never made out of one "material", it´s a combination of different ingredients.

That´s a great example.

It might be helpful to contrast the English translations too:

metal kutu - "metal box" - metal is a material, in this context this nouns "acts" like an adjective describing what the box is made of

metal kutusu - "a box of metal"

Compare with sandbox - kum kutusu - it´s obvious that the sand goes inside the box, the box itself is not made of sand, it may be made of wood - tahta kutu (with no -su ending).

The same meaning for above examples can be given by using -dan/-den suffix. If you add -dan/-den to them the meaning is the same but the shorter forms above of course are preferred.

plastikten torba - plastic bag

silikondan protez - silicone implant

kaðýttan bardak - paper cup

But some examples must have -dan/-den suffix:

Kardan adam -- snow man

so, could you say

metaldan kutu

or is that incorrect?
