Is there a difference in meaning or use of taraf versus yan?

I know they both mean "side" , but I´m wondering if they are interchangeable or perhaps if there are different applications for each.

 Actually, there are no different applications for each. Usually, we are using "Taraf" in Turkey. This is my way not offical thing

I´m just wondering because the two following sentences have slightly different meaning in English:

Are you on my side? (Do you support me?)

Are you at my side? (Are you standing next to me?)

Since at/on is -de/da in Turkish, I´m not sure how to express the difference.

So if I said in Turkish:

Benim yanýmda mýsýn?

Benim tarafýmda mýsýn?

Could I use both sentences to express both of the meanings of the original sentences? Would the meaning be dictated by the context? Or is there a better translation of those sentences?

So, if you said in Turkish;

Benim yanýmda mýsýn?

or

Benim tarafýmda mýsýn?

both of them would be  correct translation.

taraf is also used in passive sentences to show the agent. you need a possesive construction + ablative, and ofcourse a passive verb.

i never saw this with "yan" (but maybe I´m wrong)

examples

arabam tamirci tarafýndan tamir ediliyor

my car is beýng repaired by the repairman

oda benim tarafýmdan temizlendi

the room has been cleaned by me

Subject was relevant with "side" which meaning is yan = taraf.
