Women’s rights fade away
The Hürriyet human rights train tour reveals continuing challenges facing women across Turkey. The more that women try to gain and exercise their rights, the more conflict emerges between husbands and wives, with women facing increasing societal pressure
With a mission to raise women and children’s awareness of their rights, the daily Hürriyet’s human rights train, which is still touring the Eastern part of Anatolia, has visited most of the Aegean region within the last two weeks. As part of its 51-day trans-Anatolian voyage, the train has visited Ãzmir, Ãzmir’s Selçuk district, Aydýn, Denizli, Burdur, Isparta, Uþak, Manisa, Balýkesir and Bandýrma in a bid to inform women of their rights.
The tour has revealed that no matter whether the train turns east or west, the situation for women’s human rights is not that promising. Due to Western Turkey´s relative prosperity and high level of education, people are considered to be more economically and socially privileged and thus should be more conscious about their rights.

I believe it´s pretty normal for people who were comfortable off with the state of things to be irritated by changes. But they´ll eventually get accustomed to it, just like the evil westerners did

I dont think evil westerners are ALL accustomed to it either - we may have certain laws which enforce rights but it doesn´t always affect day to day prejudice and equal pay is still a huge issue.
Personally I am a little tired of always being assumed to be my male boss´s secretary when I am a manager in my own right! In my previous job I had male assistant who was always assumed to be my senior...

Pfff, so true. I work in an office with only women. People either assume we´re all secretaries, or that we are part of some kind of special program, and we were just hired for being women. Excuse me, we were all hired because we were the best! Other rooms are filled with men, and nobody wonders if they are hired simply because they are men
For people interested in the topic, you can download an article on the recent changes in women´s position in Turkey, because of the political changes in Turkey. It´s written for the UN, you can download it from the UNRISD website:

Actually in my experience in the workforce, I haven´t had to many discrimination situations with gender. However, I will say having a bunch of women in an office can be quite high maintanence. Men tend to be more low key! Not on a performance level, but more on a personal level. Sadly, but that is the truth!

I have always thought I come from a country of equal opportunities both for women and men.I thought but not EU,just a bitter thought after helping a friend to write a project subsidied from EU money. It was rejected coz we wrote youth limited by project number of words instead of writing girls and boys.EU considers Poland as a country not giving equal chances for both sexes, wondering by birdy which sex is neglected....
tami-spare me comments here, just shut up!
