very close.

 

kadýnlar katýlamazdý ve oyunlarda hazýr bulunmanýn bile cezasý ölümdü.

 

but "pain of death" should be "penalty of death"?

the sentence is correct. this is written on IELTS exam. it is very difficult to understand....Head bang

This phrase ´on pain of death´ is perfectly correct and is an English idiom - but I think it is fair to translate it using ´penalty´.

 

Tureng translates it as:  ölum cezasýyla
