I made up some short phrases in english for myself to translate into turkish to see if i understood what i have learned so far. I would appreciate it if anyone could correct me on them please...thanks!

when i say ´her cat´, do i have to put ´onun kedisi´ or just ´kedisi´ ?

It´s both possible.

But mostly they leave onun away because ´si´ is already saying his/hers, so there isnt much need to say it with it.

dog= köpek                                food= yemek

the dog= köpeği                         the food= yemeği

When used in a sentence, with accusative case, yes this is how you use them.  But if it´s just "the dog and not a sentence it´s just "köpek"

The dog is hungry > Köpek aç.

I saw the dog. > Köpeği gördüm.

So, ´the dog is hungry´ would not be ´köpeği aç´ ? Why is this?

Yes, the examples he has given are correct.. as I said in my previous post..

The dog is hungry... "the dog" is not in accusative case here, it is the subject. Ergo it does not receive the suffix.

I saw the dog...  "the dog" here is the object and is in accusative case.. this is why it gets the suffix -i when written in Turkish.
