Hi I was trying to work this one out, but the missed letters made it too difficult for me as a learner. ´geri don va da donme: ben senleyim´ Just wondering, so I can understand more, should it be ´ya da´ meaning ´or´ instead of ´va da´ and dönme meaning ´turning/don´t turn´ (with the -me suffix giving negative meaning) instead of donme. And what is the meaning of the word ´don´ should it be spelt ´dön´ instead?
So the sentence, literally translated, would mean ´turn back or dont turn´? My vocabulary is still quite limited so I love learning new words (although I did learn the word dönmek from the vocabulary lists here, I love those lists!) and the way they are used in sentences so if anyone copuld answer my questions that would be great,
teşekkür ederim
Most of what you said is correct,
ya da>> "either... or" or just "or"
dönme>> yes it means do not turn=) I mean it kinda depends on the context, it could either be come back or turn back.. and I just thought come back would fit there better than turn back.
you´re correct it should be "dönme" =) but it is a common typo so I did not bother changing it, if you want to see the correct version of the sentence here it is,
Şimdi çok uzakta, kimbilir neredesin: geri dön va da dönme: ben seninleyim...
so the literal translation would either be(for the third part of the sentence)
Either turn back or do not turn back
or
Either come back or do not come back
but as you know in English we can just say "either do it or not" and we don´t have to repeat the verb as we do in Turkish, we can just add the negation after "or"=)
just so you know, dönmek can mean
to circle
to come back
to turn back
to back down
to rotate
to change into
and so on=)
ps: don is something totally different than dön.. it also has several meanings:
Don!>> Freeze(but not in the sense when cops tell you to, it´s like.. freeze from cold..
don>> underwear(although külot or iç çamaşır is preferred)
don>>frost(you can relate this to "freeze", don here is used as a noun and not as a verb..
Hope I could answer your questions=) Don´t hesitate to ask for more info on this=)
