Could someone explain when to use bu, bunun, şu, şunun, and the other demonstrative pronouns and demonstrative possessive pronouns please because im not sure what the difference is between using ´that´ and ´of that´

Umm, not that I think it will be much help, heres what ive got written for a start:

Bu - this (close to the speaker)
So basically, if theres something in your hands, or your pointing to something "this is..."

Şu - that or this
This is supposed to be for when something´s far away. Or im guessing when somethigns not in your sight.

So, if your asking whats the difference between Bu and Bunun?

Have you learnt about suffixes before? Thats one of things I was talking about, you need to know how suffixes work to do alot of things in Turkish.

For example, if you want to say.. It is the something of this.

´of´ would be added on to ´this´ as a suffix.

If you want to add a suffix onto either şu or bu, you have to add ´n´ first.

So before we add the suffix for ´of´ onto bu, we have to make it bun.

The suffix for ´of´ is -un.
So if we add it all together = bun + (-un) = bunun.

Oh, the difference between ´that´ and ´of that´ ?

Well think about when you would use ´that´.

that is a cat.

I hate that.

But if you were talking ´of that´, you could say:

I like the colour of that.

It´s simply the nature of that.

I understand your examples with ´of that´ in the sentence, but on one of the homeworks on this site it doesnt have ´of that´ in their sentences, one of them say ´that dog has a black collar´, and it confused me because i thought it would be ´şu tasması siyah´ and not ´şunun taması siyah´ because it hasnt got ´of that´ in the sentence lol :/

Hmm loll yeah I wouldn´t rely on my examples atall.
But I think there could be three options here

1. (most likely) Im wrong!
2. The homework has errors, they sometimes do.
3. It could actually translate to something along the lines of "the collar of that dog is black". I know that sounds insane! And im not meaning that could be the exact translation, but who knows? lol. Im sure someone smarter will help ya out here.

If you must listen to my advice, don´t listen to it too often. It´s never a good idea

bunun-its

şunun-is its but for the far away things

basically we use these forms to talk about possessives.... for exapmle

bunun adı fluffy--- lets say were talking about a cat so in Englısh ı would say- itS name is fluffy (using the possessive s of course which is equivalent to nun in bunun) 

as for şunun like i said its for the things that are not close to us for the same example stated above

şunun adı fluffy---- that cat´s name is fluffy.

(again possessive s in cat´s, again the s means nun)

i know that my example is quite stupid since you would actually say in english --its called fluffy... but i couldnt come up with a better example :S

Haha yeah it probably does mean ´of that dog´ or something but they should have used your examples with the actual pronoun ´of that´ in it lol.

Ohhh, do you mean that the ´of that/this/those´ means that it belongs to someone or something, imantay?

yes exactly we use them to convey possessions just like

benim adim = my name is (nim is equivalent to my) my is a possessive pronoun

so in the case of (şu, bu, o) we can use the prefix (nun)to relate to possessıves

onun kitabi tut= hold his/ her book ( here onun is used instead of his/her which are possessive pronouns )
