Hi everyone,

Could someone please help me and explain the difference between şehir and şehri and when you use them?

şehir means city, yea?  But when I looked up Dublin in the dictionary here I found this meaning ´irlandanın başkenti Dublin şehri´ meaning the Capital city Dublin Ireland, and when I looked up şehri in tureng dictionary I got lots of examples describing cities and towns, so I´m getting a bit confused now {#emotions_dlg.confused} haha.  I don´t understand why the I and the R seem to be swapping places!  I know I´ve been very bold and not done any Turkish in a while {#emotions_dlg.eeek} (just been finding it hard to get back into after Christmas, kids birthdays, snow, water shortages etc) but I didn´t think I´d be getting this confused already {#emotions_dlg.doh}

PS. I´m loving the new smileys!! thanks for them!

I thought that this would explain it

but şehir doesn´t seem to be on the list!

(I still think that´s the reason though according to my dictionary)

Aw thanks for that sonunda

I get it now, and even though şehir isn´t on the list it does seem like it´s the reason, that you drop the last vowel because your adding -i suffix

Another list to learn now though, wish I had one of them photographic memories!! haha

şehrim = my city

it is an inversion of letters

Quoting elenagabriela

şehir = city

şehrim = my city

it is an inversion of letters

It´s not an transposition of letters. It´s dropping the final vowel before adding the suffix.
