Makber

The Grave

Eyvah ne yer ne yâr kaldı

Oh my God neither a place nor beloved remained

Gönlüm dolu ah-u zâr kaldı

My heart is filled with cries of moaning

Şimdi buradaydı gitti elden

Now she was here, she is gone

Gitti ebede gelip ezelden

She went to the eternity, coming from the pasteternity

Ben gittim o haksar kaldı

I went, she remained miserable

Bir köşede tarumar kaldı

She remained scatterred at a spot

Baki o enisi dilden eyvah

What remained from that bird of heart

Beyrutta bir mezar kaldı

Is a grave in Beirut

Bildir bana nerde nerde Yarab

Tell me o God where she is.

Kim attı beni bu derde Yarab

Who threw me into this trouble o God?

Nerde arayayım o dil rübayı

Where should i search for the heart which took my heart

Kimden sorayım bi-nevayı

Who should i ask for that poor?

Derlerki unut o aşnayı

They say “Forget that acquaintance”

Gitti tutarak reh-i bekayı

She went by taking the way of permanence

Sığsın mı hayale bu hakikat?

Do i let this truth to fit into the imagination?

Görsün mü gözüm bu macerayı?

Do i let my eyes to see this adventure?

Sür´atle nasılda değişti halim

How fast my situation changed

Almaz bunu havsalam hayalim.

I can’t understand it.

Çık Fatıma! lahteden kıyam et

Come out Fatima! Arise from your  sarcophagus

Yanımdaki haline devam et

Go on near me where you left

Ketm etme bu razı şöyle bir söz

Don’t hide this secret, a word like that

Ben isterim ah öyle birsöz

Ah i want a word like that

Güller gibi meyl-i ibtisam et

Smile like roses

Dağı dile çare bul meram et

Find a cure to this heart wound, intend

Bir tatlı bakışla bir gülüşle

With a sweet glance, with a sweet smile

Eyyamı hayatımı temam et

Complete the days of my life

Makber mi nedir şu gördüğüm yer?

Is it a grave or what that i see?

Ya böyle reva mı ey cay-ı dilber

Do you deem me worthy of this  O! Place of beauty?

Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan (1857-1932)

Note: The poem is written in old Turkish.

My try. J
