Hi,

I want to know if I can ever use "rica ediyorum" as the same as "rica ederim"?

I mean when someone tells you, "tesekkurler" can I say "rica ediyorum" in stead of saying "rica ederim"? Is it possible?

Thanks

rica ederim: you are wellcome

rica ediyorum: I am asking/requesting

so they are totaly different and one cannot be used for the other.

Possible, but not exactly correct in contemporary use of Turkish language.

"Rica ediyorum" is equivalent to "I request............"

"Rica ederim", nowadays, is a response to someone thanking you and roughly corresponds to "You are welcome" or "My pleasure".

Here is an explanation I think that might work:

First of all both "Rica ederim" and "Rica ediyorum" have the primary meaning of "I request, I implore", only in different tenses. Simply put, it´s a way of saying "please".

"Rica ederim"on the other hand, is also a common way to say "you´re welcome", however this is not random or totally unrelated to its primary meaning. Consider the scenario where someone expresses gratitude towards you:

-Çok sağol. (Thanks)

-Rica ederim(You´re welcome)

Now think it along the lines:

-Thanks. (Teşekkürler)

-Oh please, do not even mention it / it was nothing. (Rica ederim, önemli değil)

Or simply:

-Oh please. (Rica ederim)

I think it is more clear now where that comes from. It´s simply the "please" part of phrases such as "Please don´t even mention it", "please, it was nothing", which over time has become a common usage. same thing applies to English as well.

A FINER POINT ON "RICA EDIYORUM"

Although "rica ediyorum" is a very polite way of expressing your wish, it is slightly different than "I request" in English language,

Though very polite, "rica ediyorum" is nevertheless a form of command: not to be freely used, when adressing your superiors.

For example, you can finish your order to the pizza man, or your instruction to a subordinate in the office with "rica ediyorum", but a petition to your boss should not end with "rica ediyorum". To a boss, the proper way is to end the petition by "arz ediyorum", which is not a direct request but only a request for your wish to be considered by your boss..
