Hi I was wondering if someone could take a look at the the homework example below and tell me if it´s correct.  It´s from beginner 4 section 1: Questions in imperatives

Its the consonant harmony that confuses me, I thought when a letter like ´t´ came between 2 vowels it changed to ´d´

9.

Demek Türkçe öğrenmek istiyorsun. Sana ............ (öğretmek)?

A. öğretmeyin mi?
B. öğreteyim mi?
C. öğredeyim mi? (Correct answer is öğreteyim mi?)
D. öğredesin mi?

This is a good question, according to the consonant harmony rules, it should be "öğredeyim mi"

Two conditions must be satisfied for word mutation to occur:

  1. You have a word ending with one of ´p, ç, t, k´.

  2. You want to add this word a suffix that starts with a vowel.

If the word has only one syllable, like saç, you are safe. The word does not change. However, if the word has more than one syllable, than the consonant at the end changes.

So according to this rule, there should be a mutation, but there isn´t. So this must be an exception.

Actually consonant harmony rules cannot be applied in this case. You can apply it when a stem ending with one of s,p,t,h,ç,ş,f,k is followed by a suffix starting with consonant (not the case in the example). Consonant harmony is about the mutation in the suffix not in the stem.

stem= öğret- (OK it ends with one of s,p,t,h,ç,ş,f,k)

suffix= -eyim

so you just glue them one another:

öğret-eyim

Exception happens in the following example (but it is not consonant harmony):

Stem= git-

suffix= -eyim

gid-eyim

An example of consonant harmony would be

Stem= git-

Suffix= -di

git-ti (d becomes t in -di suffix as a result of consonant harmony)

According to this lesson:

Consonant harmony

there are two cases: word mutation and suffix mutation, so both can occur..

I think this is because of "minimum effort rule (en az çaba kanunu)". "öğredeyim mi" is harder than "öğreteyim mi" to pronounce.

For example, "bulut" means "cloud". When that noun recieves -a (dativee form) ;

bulut + a > buluta.

"t" does not change. Because "buluda" needs more effort to pronounce. Consotant mutuation is to ease the pronunciation:

balık + a > balığa.

Balıka is hard to pronounce but we ease it by turning it into "balığa"

thx

As one doesn´t think much about their native language, I am not sure what is the rule exactly for verbs, but definitely "öğretmek" is not an exception;

öğretmek- öğretirim

kapatmak-kapatırım

akıtmak-akıtırım

kanatmak-kanatırım

not only for "t"

gecikmek-gecikirim

acıkmak-acıkırım

couldn´t remember any verbs ending with p or ç now but it is similar

Case A cannot be considered a case of consonant harmony rule. Those are just exceptions you need to memorise, there is no rule about those mutations. Word mutation sounds like an appropriate term. Consonant harmony on the other hand is a rule that you can apply according to its definition.

For example:

suffix= -di

stem= iste-

iste-di (no mutation in suffix)

but

stem= istet-

istet-ti (mutation in sufix - this is cononant harmon)
