Yalçın´la ilk defa dün tanıştım. (also you can put "dün" at the beginning)

in my opinion "ilk defa" (for the first time) isn´t necessary with the verb "tanışmak". "tanışmak" only happens once. "to meet" is more close to "buluşmak"

Dün Yalçın´la tanıştım.

Yalçın´la ilk defa dün buluştum.

 You pointed out one of the common errors in Turkish usage. Yes, as it"only happens once", there is no need to use "ilk defa" with the verb "tanış-"

And, yes, "dün" can be placed at the beginning or end of the sentence:

"Dün Yalçın´la tanıştım" is the answer for the question, "what did you do yesterday?"

"Yalçın´la dün tanıştım" is the answer for the question, "when did you meet Yalçın?"
