Turkish military strikes PKK targets in northern Iraq
Some 20 Turkish warplanes launched a series of cross-border air raids against nearly 50 suspected Kurdish targets in northern Iraq, an army source cited.

The military scrambled jets to carry out the attack after a group of suspected, Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK members were detected on Iraqi territory, approaching Turkey´s mountainous border with Iraq.
The PKK took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984 in a conflict that has claimed 40,000 lives.
The militants, who are mainly based in Iraqi Kurdistan, say they are fighting for greater political rights for Turkey´s estimated 15 million Kurds. The United States and the European Union both label the PKK a terrorist organization.
