Another way that you can form this kind of statement is using the -dir/-dır/-dür/-dur suffix to mean "for" or "in," as in "We´ve been trying to learn Turkish for 3 years" or "I haven´t seen you in 2 days!" You would attach the suffix to the word for the time period. For example,
yıl >> yıldır
gün >> gündür
Here are some examples lifted directly from Turkish literature (Harry Potter ve Ateş Kadehi!):
"Yüzyılın en güçlü Karanlık büyücüsü, on bir yıldır sürekli güç kazanmış bir büyücü olan Voldemort´un evlerine gelip annesiyle babasını öldürdüğü o gece, Harry bir yaşındaydı."
Translation: Harry had been a year old the night that Voldemort - the century´s most powerful Dark Wizard, a wizard who had been gaining power steadily for eleven years - arrived at his house and killed his father and mother.
"Umarım Harry´yi de maça götürmemize izin verirsiniz, çünkü bu, hayatta insanın eline bir kez geçecek bir fırsat, ingiltere Kupaya otuz yıldır ev sahipliği etmedi, bilet bulmak da çok zor."
Translation: I hope that you´ll also let us bring Harry to the match, because this is the chance of a lifetime; Britain hasn´t hosted the Cup in 30 years, and finding tickets is also very hard.
"Mr Weasley yavaşça, ´Ve on üç yıldır görülmemişti,´ dedi."
Translation: "And for 13 years he hadn´t been seen," said Mr. Weasley slowly. (referring to Voldemort, if you have read the series!)
