i thought bir tane meant one more - on going into a shop and asking for kucuk su lutfen i was asked bir tane?

is the phrase memnum oldum only used when meeting someone for the first time or can it be used when meeting friends? i believe there is a phrase seni gorduezma sevindim (please excuse incorrect spelling) that can be used for people you know.

memnun oldum > nice to meet you.

bir tane: one in number

bir tane elma : one apple

üç tane ev: three houses (in number)

bir tane daha: one more in number

bir tane daha kitap: one more book (in number)

bir tane means just "one" in quantity, not one more, one more is "bir tane daha"

yes "(tanıştığımıza) memnun oldum" is for the first time meeting only, although technically you could say "seni gördüğüme memnun oldum" when you meet people that you already know, it is not a common expression. As you said "seni gördüğüme sevindim" (nice to see you) is appropriate in this case.
