This is probably very simple and I´m sure I should know the answer really - but how do you say ´if´ in this sentence:

´Can you tell me if Cem Bey has the keys?´  The best I could come up with is: ´Can you tell me, does Cem Bey hold the keys?)

It´s obviously not an ´if´ this happens/doesn´t happen´ or an ´if only´ type sentence but can you use the word ´eğer´ on it´s own in a case like this, i.e. ´.....eğer Cem Bey anahtarlı var?´

Help please - I have given my neighbour´s keys to someone else by mistake!!  Cry  They don´t speak any English so I want make sure I get it right! (Also it made me realise I didn´t know (or maybe couldn´t remember) this ´if´ thing).

Thanks in advance

 "Anahtarlar Cem bey´de mi acaba?"

That´s how we would say it in Turkish

Thanks - but why ´Cem bey´de and not Cem bey´le´? (because I did think of something like this originally)

 Good question.

we prefer -de to -le in this type of sentences.

-de (on)

-le (with)

üzerimde para yok - I have no money on me

We never say, "benimle para yok" - "I have no money with me" (which is more formal in English)

Anahtarlar Cem Bey´de mi = are the keys on Mr.Cem? is correct

Anahtarlar Cem Bey´le mi? = are the keys with Mr.Cem? is incorrect

üzerimde para yok - I have no money on me

Shorter version:

Bende para yok = I have got no money

Sende para var mı? = Have you got (some) money?

And yet another version:

Para bende = The money is with me or I have got the money

Para sende mi? = Is the money with you or Have you got the money?

Here´s some more. That kind of if can be translated using "mi" question particle or v-ip v-me-... construction.

Do you know if she´s coming to the party tonight?

(O) bu akşam partiye geliyor mu biliyor musun? or

(Onun) bu akşam partiye gelip gelmediğini biliyor musun?

I am not sure if this is right

Bu doğru mu emin değilim

Bunun doğru olup olmadığından emin değilim

It´ not clear yet if she will come too

O da gelecek mi daha belli değil

Onun da gelip gelmeyeceği daha belli değil

You are welcome I hope it´s clear enough to understand why we prefer -de to -le in this type of sentence as in your example.
