Of course it is - nobody in the west wants to make friends with anyone unless there is some benefit, financial or otherwise, to that friendship. This is why in the west only very rich, influential people have any friends and the rest of us have to try and form virtual friendships on the internet.

I think you mean that the west are more individualistic - referring to the circle of friends we have and how we are with our families. We are less likely to have extended groups of friends or extended families. We tend to put our own needs before others. As opposed to collectivism where there are more likely to be extended families and people will put the needs of other before themselves. Usually societies where there are high moral standards to.
If you are interested in learning more about business culture, where the various aspects of culture are described (individualism vs collectivism) then Gerrt Hofstede´s book Cultural Dimensions is a reasonably easy book to read.

Haha! So true - especially the virtual friends
(unless you are the very rich and very famous CEO responsible for a famous oil spill of course)

True.I agree with lady in red and libralady on this meaning - philosophy. We have a Turkish proverb. It has a same meaning. It is also an Islamic philosophy. Like this: "İnsanın hayırlısı (iyisi) , başkalarına faydası ve katkısı olandır. : good man is the one who is helpful for the others."
