Selam, Ece, nasılsın? Uzun zaman olmuş biz telefonla yada internet üzerinden sohbet etmedik. Umarım tatilinden hoşlanıyorsundur. Gelecek ay on yıl yaşında olacaksın, senin doğun günü dileğin nedir? Yakın zamanda seninle görüşürüz inşallah. Her zaman kendini iyi bak. Seni özledim. Allah iyiliğini versin!

Not to be picky ... but it is a point worth talking about as most people from the UK are not aware Turks count age differently. In the UK you will be turning ten next month means someone born in August 2000 will be having their birthday.

In Turkey this may mean they are ten, but quite a lot of people count this as eleven. For example in the insurance law you are counted as the age of the year you have entered "gün almış yaş".

To avoid the ambiguity, you can say gelecek ay on yaşını dolduracaksın "to complete 10 years".

I remember going to the hospital for a medical check for my job aged 29. I wasn´t feeling ill when I went in: it was just a routine check up before employment. First they wrote me down as a patient "hasta" - literally the ill one. Then they put under my "yaş" - age - 30. I certainly felt ill at that!!!!

Of course now in my 40s age doesn´t matter (liar, liar !!!)

Hasta is used in the same sense as "patient" in English. Say, you are Dr. Hakan´s patient, that means you are a client of his. Hasta in this case is a homonym and it also means ill or sick depending on the context.

Homonyms are plenty in Turkish. Depending on the context the word "yüz" means:

one hundred

to swim

face

front side of an object

to remove the hide of an animal from his flesh, scalping etc.
