Meaning content of sayings often nonplus me in Turkish!!!

I know, semantic translations are really difficult.

And the literal meaning for those who are curious like me is -

The one whose mouth has been burnt by milk, eats yogurt by blowing it.

Thus the similarity to the ´once bitten, twice shy´ saying.

To explain for the non-English speakers: this means ´once you are bitten by an animal, the next time you avoid going near it ( or shy away from it)

Actually we have a deeper meaning in ours, Henry,

Süt is hot and yoğurt isn´t (normally).

If you had a bad experince with something, you would be even more careful in a less serious case in which you wouldn´t normally.

It´s normally used, as si++ says,not literally bitten by an animal but rather something you´ve experienced that was rather painful in which, given the same situation again, you´d be more cautious. Most often used in relation to love! (or marriage!)

Thanks si++ and sonunda. I realise that both the Turkish and English sayings have much deeper meanings than the ´literal´ translations. I was just trying to explain the literal Turkish and also the background to the English words used.

I agree that the English expression ´once bitten, twice shy´ is mostly used with reference to love relationships. Often meaning once you have had your heart broken by a lover, you are more wary in the next relationship.

It is also used after someone lends money ( or something valuable) to a friend and it is not repaid/returned, and they are reluctant to lend again.
