It may be helpful to think of it as putting a 'y' in front when the a^ (sorry i don't have the correct letter on my keyboard) appears after a consenant.

e.g. ka^r = (pron.) kyar.

as opposed to:

kar = (pron) kar.

And when it appears at the beginning of a word simply lengthens the sound so a^det is like, when the doctor says "say ahhh" - ahhhdet, where as adet is just "uh det".

Nor we have. The Turkish keyboard doesnt include the letter  â but I do it the following way:

for  : press "shift + ^ + A"
for â : press CAPS LOCK and than press "shift + ^ + A"

^ is on the key 3 on Turkish and on the key 6 on UK English keyboard.
