Hi all i am new to this site - and am very glad i found it.
I currently live in turkey and am desperate to learn the language. I have been coming to turkey for 6 years or so and take time out to learn the basics. However when i think i am learning i realise that when i listen to a turkish conversation that i cant understand a thing. I just dont know which ways i learn best as from speaking i just forget things and if i read from a book i end up trying to memorise rather than learning. Please can someone help?? I wonder whether i will ever pick up the language to me it seems so complicated

Well here you are definitely at the right address You should take a look at the Grammar section of this website and from there study the basics. If you read everythin thoroughly and write down the things you don't understand, you can post them in the language forums of this website and many wonderful people will be willing to help you.
I started with the basics too a few months ago, well i'm still at the basics.. but i get great help here

But how did you manage to live in Türkiye for 6 years without learning the language at all

Hi thanks for your reply. I will try that.
Yes i now live in Turkey but just came from being in England for 3 years. I have turkish family here and they all say that just speaking will help me learn but i find it all just goes over my head! if i dont know what they are saying how will i ever understand?!
Is it ok just to start with learning say 5 words per day and then progress from there? will sentances ever start to form that way?
Thanks for your help

I think by just listening to what people say, you cannot learn. If you were a small child, it would be different, but now as an adult you need to study the language with books taking notes, and doing exercises. At least you should have an idea of the language you hear. It's comletely a different grammar. And when you get the basic knowledge, then all the daily talkings will help you improve very fast.

I'd start with the grammar section on this site, ánd trying to learn five words a day
But seriously, you can't do without the grammar. So start here, and you'll see you will make progress, I promise you

hi
well you can actually only stay in turkey for 3 months as thats how long your visa lasts for. However you cannot work on that. You need to have a work visa and for this you need to apply to the turkish consulate in London.
You will find their address is you do a google search. Never try to work in turkey without a work visa or you may face being deported back to england. hope this helps
