I have been doing some practice writting and having it checked by a Turk.  They keep having a go at me as I seem to use  ´tıpkısını´ when they tell me I must use ´aynısını´

For example I wrote -  Bu elbisenin  tıpkısını  istiyorum. But they tell me I can not and I must write Bu elbisenin aynısını istiyorum.

I thought that tıpkı is like ´identical´ / ´same´ so can someone please explain why it is wrong to use it ? I don´t understand

"tıpkı" and "aynı" have similar meanings but we prefer to use "aynı" most of the time. The answer to your question is that when you google "tıpkısını" you get 16.000 results but when you google "aynısını" you get 2.910.000 results. So choice is yours which one to use.

"Tıpkı" more or less means exactly the same, exactly alike. So it has a stronger meaning. Usually "aynı" is more widely used as evidenced by gokuyum.

There are just some cases where "tıpkı" is used over "aynı". It means "exactly the same"

When talking about the resemblance of a child to someone (usually in the family):

- Tıpkı sen!

- Tıpkı sana benziyor.

Tıpkı is like a copy of something.

Or it could be used in cases when we make a comparison using with "gibi". An example from the net:

- Kola tıpkı eroin gibi.

- Tıpkı bebek gibi bir gülüşü var.

I would express it as:

tıpkı: just like

(tıpkı babası - just like his father)

aynı: the same
