I have read this 30 times, I am told it has to do with warfare. I can´t see that part. Can someone Interpret this Türkçe  poem. I guess that I don´t understand it. Maybe I am not reading it correctlly?

Dağlarda tek
tek

ateşler yanıyordu.
Ve yıldızlar öyle ışıltılı, öyle ferahtılar ki
şayak kalpaklı adam
nasıl ve ne zaman geleceğini bilmeden

güzel, rahat günlere inanıyordu
ve gülen bıyıklarıyla duruyordu ki mavzerinin yanında,
birdenbire beş adım sağında onu gördü.
Paşalar onun arkasındaydılar.
O, saatı sordu.
Paşalar : «Üç,» dediler.
Sarışın bir kurda benziyordu.
Ve mavi gözleri çakmak çakmaktı.
Yürüdü uçurumun başına kadar,
eğildi, durdu.
Bıraksalar
ince, uzun bacakları üstünde yaylanarak
ve karanlıkta akan bir yıldız gibi kayarak
Kocatepe´den Afyon Ovası´na atlıyacaktı.

Hi Taffy..this poem is all about Atatürk (Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of republic of turkey ) and describing a scenery of turkish independence war.Just before one of the war Ataturk commanding the army on the hill of kocatepe, watching Afyon valley from the top of Kocatepe hill with his officers..here its describing Atatürk and the scenery by praising him in epic way..this is an epic poem of turkish independece and ataturk..

it would be like this..

ALONE IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fires were burning in the mountains one by one..

And the stars were so bright, so relieved..

the man with a cotton hat was believing in beautiful and prosperous days,

without knowing how and when they will come..

As he was standing next to his mauser rifle with his smiling moustache,

Suddenly he saw him five steps away him...

And all the Pashas (generals) behind him..

He asked the time,Pashas said its ´´three´...

He looked like a blonde wolf,

And his blue eyes were sparkling..

He walked up to the edge of cliff...

and he bent down,and stopped..

if they ever let him,

He was ready to jump off from Kocatepe,

On to the Afyon Plain,

by bouncing with his thin and long legs..

and slipping like a star flowing in the dark.

Note : the person described in heroic way in the poem above is Ataturk ,founder of  Turkey..its an epic poem written by Nazım Hikmet Ran who is one of best poets of turkish language..

This is a description of Ataturk, commander in chief of Turkish Armies, in wee hours of one October morning, just before the invading Greek army was served the final blow.... thru the eyes of one of his own soldiers.

At that point, the commander is watching from a high cliff, the enemy formation down at the plains. His fameous order to the Turkish Army, only few hours later was "Armies! The next stop is at the shores of Mediterrenian Sea (about 300 km away)...Charge forward !"

And that was exactly what happened....

I found this translation on internet

Fires here
and
there
flickered in the mountains.
And the stars were so luminous and so serene
that the man with the serge kalpak
believed in the beautiful, comfortable days ahead
how and when they`d arrive, without knowing
and just when he was smiling into his mustache,
next to his mouser
suddenly, he saw Him, five steps to his right.
The generals were behind, standing.
He, asked for the time.
“It`s three o`clock,” replied the generals.
He looked like a blond wolf.
And his blue eyes with fire flashing
he walked to the edge of the cliff,
leaned over and stopped.
If only they`d let him
taking off on his slim long limbs
and gliding in the dark, like a star streaming
he would`ve jumped from the Kocatepe Heights into the Afyon Plain.
