* Softening of the hard consonants is a grammer rule in Turkish.

* If a word that finishes with a consonant (p,ç,t,k) takes a suffix starting with a vowel, those hard consonants softens to  (b,c,d,ğ or g)

 * gecik+ecek+im  -so here  k turn into ğ  according to rule.

  * örnek: bırakacağım=bırak+acak+ım

  *kitap+ı = kitabı

  * ağaç+ı = ağacı

  * inat+ı=inadı

   There are exceptions of course like in every rule in turkish

  * This rule does not apply to proper nouns like names

   * if the ´´t´´ at the end of the word is a part of the suffix itself,it does not softens

      [konut+u =konutu,yakıt+ın =yakıtın,yazıt+ın=yazıtın]

Yes but that is not the answer to her question. She asks why the "k" in gecikmek does not soften. gecikeceğim

I think its the answer as you can see in the exceptions the word ´´gecik´´itself got already hard consonants ´´t´´  so its obviously one of the exceptions..

another example : konut+u = konutu 

                         başlat+acak = başlatacak

i think its clear..
