Hi,

Can someone help me translate the following from Turkish to English:

Sağlıkli olman için önce kilolardan kurtulman gerekiyor.

Bu kilolardan kurtulmanın yollarindan biri de düzenli olarak spor yapmaktır.

İnsan istedikten sonra spor yapacak yer bulur.

Can someone please explain the grammar - kurtulman gerekiyor?

Thank you

Can someone please explain the grammar - kurtulman gerekiyor?

I will try. Firstly here is a quick explanation from this site

3. Need to

This is very similar to the use of have to, both in meaning and structure. The word we use to give the meaning of need to is ´gerekiyor´. It is similar to ´have to´ in meaning, so that it can be used interchangeably with have to (lazım). It is similar in structure, which can be seen in the structural skeleton:

    verb-me-posession (blank space) gerekiyor

The following examples will clarify this further:

I need to go home. --> Eve gitmem gerekiyor.

You need to be here at 2. --> Saat ikide burada olman gerekiyor.

You need to sleep early. --> Erken uyuman gerekiyor.

She needs to see a doctor. --> Doktora gitmesi gerekiyor.

And here are my thoughts as well   Smile

Gerekmek is a verb meaning ´to be necessary´

gerekiyor is the present continuous tense form meaning ´it is being necessary´

Whatever we want to say is necessary is converted to a ´verbal noun´, by removing the infinitive ending (- mak/mek) and adding the verbal noun suffix ( + ma/me) and then the appropriate letter for the personal ending.

So if we want to say "I need to know"

Bilmek = to know

Bil + me = bilme = knowing (a verbal noun)

bilme + m = bilmem = my knowing

bilmem gerekiyor = my knowing is necessary (literal) or I need to know

bilmen gerekiyor = you need to know

bilmesi gerekiyor  he/she needs to know

So back to your question

kurtulman = kurtul + ma + n (personal ending for you

kurtulmak = to be rid of (something)

kurtulman gerekiyor = you need to be rid of ........(kilos)

Hope that helps you Lilyana Smile

My attempt -

Sağlıkli olman için önce kilolardan kurtulman gerekiyor.

First you need to lose kilos to be healthy

Bu kilolardan kurtulmanın yollarindan biri de düzenli olarak spor yapmaktır.

One of the pathways to losing these kilos is by also doing regular exercise.

İnsan istedikten sonra spor yapacak yer bulur.

A person will exercise after wanting (to lose kilos) and he/she will find a place.

Wait for corrections.

Great translation again Henry.. i would just do the last sentence a bit differently.

Insan istedikten sonra spor yapacak yer bulur.

If a person has a will to exercise he/she will find a place.  or

As long one has a will to exercise he/she will find a place.

kurtulmak=get rid of

Bu bağlamda kilo kaybetmek ve kilolardan kurtulmak da kullanılabilir. Anlamı bozmaz.

Agree. If you want to be literal about it, kurtulman = to be saved from

So "if you want to be saved from kilos" is literal translation

The meaning is "if you want to lose weight", "if you want to get rid of some weight", or maybe even "if you want to stop being overweight"
