I am trying to memorize it.  Could this format work too?

I think as a learner that 

Ben onu ezberleyip çalışıyorum = Ben onu ezberliyorum ve  çalışıyorum

Which would mean ´I am memorizing it and studying it´.

In my opinion this meaning is different to the other formula.

 Yes that format is correct. But that does have different meaning than " I am trying to memorize it."

    Ben onu ezberleyip çalışıyorum means I memorize and study it.

    And it means also I study it by memorizing.
