As your explanation the day that was celebrated by Islamic culture was a spiritual day which becomes each year before Ramadan. Originally the words is coming from Arabic language "Berat" is a meaning to be purified/ cleaned / forgived from sins which you were responsible your sins for one year period, This is chance to pray to God. "Kandil" is a meaning of a light, in here the original menaing is a "chance" as result you can imagine the complete meaning "forgiven chance(day)" by God.
